ODOT considers replacing historic Waterville Bridge

WATERVILLE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A historic bridge in Waterville could soon be replaced, if planning goes through.

The Waterville Bridge is a highly-traveled bridge build in 1940. It allows drivers to cross the Maumee River, heading to Bowling Green or Perrysburg.

"I use it at least twice a day," said driver Matt Nolan.

Now the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) plans to replace the bridge. They are currently in the planning stages of the project, completing studies to make sure their work will be environmentally friendly, safe for drivers, and able to maintain the bridge's historical integrity.

"If it's needed for safety, great," said driver Amy Cluley. "I hope it's a good expense and not wasteful, but [the bridge is] definitely a need."

ODOT plans to hold a public meeting in March of next year to fully explain the project, but one local business is already welcoming the construction.

"I think it might slow traffic down here a lot more, and that's a plus because it can get real crazy," said Shawna Harris from Dale's Diner.

The project is expected to cost $14 million and construction is expected to start in 2017.
