TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
It has been 14 years since Romulus Durant graduated from Waite High School.
On Thursday, Dr. Durant took charge of the school district that helped shape him.
Durant says his immediate goals for the district are twofold. First, he says he wants to improve the math and reading skills of Toledo Public Schools students.
"Having a systematic approach that everyone understands the aim in regards to the goals and objective, which ultimately our vision is to become an A rated school district, where the graduates are college and career ready," said Durant.
He also needs to convince voters to renew the district's 6.5 mil levy on November 5.
"The main thing is having much more of an intentional focus. That our campaign is going to be broken up into 6 campaigns, which are all broken up into learning communities, based on their local high school. So, there's no one who can sell that to that area better than the local schools in that area," said Durant.
Beyond those specific goals, Durant says he is working to effect a cultural change in Toledo Public Schools.
"We're going to develop a whole new sense of pride, what it means to be TPS proud," said the new interim superintendent.
