BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A $13 million renovation project is about to start at Bowling Green State University. Next year, students will have an updated recreation center to help keep them fit.

The recreation center was last updated in 1979. It will be unrecognizable after a floor-to-ceiling makeover.

Students say the update is needed.

"It will be nice to have new equipment because some of this stuff is falling apart," said Gage Barton, a junior.

Nearly half a million dollars will be spent on new equipment. Workout areas will be more open with colorful designs and plenty of natural light. Locker rooms will be brand new, as well as basketball court floors.

"The buzz words in higher education right now are recruitment and retention," said Associate Director of Facilities Thad Long. "So we certainly think it's going to help in our recruitment of students that might be looking at other schools and say, ‘Hey, this is a great spot. I want to be a part of this building.'"

Although current students are excited, they don't think most prospective students will be swayed by the center.

"You're not going to make your ultimate decision about your education over a workout facility," said Julian Jackson.

The facility will be closed for two weeks. Major renovations will start mid-August. Students will be able to work out during renovations.
