A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime."
First it was Perrysburg, now Rossford residents want to be able to
decide if the city stays in or opts out of TARTA services.
Rossford city council voted to keep TARTA in June, but a group of
residents want the voters to decide, so they started Citizens Choice. The group
has gathered enough signatures on a petition to put the issue on the November
Christopher Kelly takes the bus from Toledo into Rossford every day.
Without it, he says he wouldn't be able to get to work.
"It would devastate my family tremendously," Kelly said. "I work every
day, Monday through Friday, and I depend on this bus until I get a car.
Basically, it would hurt a lot. We really need this."
But the members of Citizens Choice say the decision should lie with the
"The citizens are the ones that support TARTA through their tax
dollars," said Robert Densic, secretary of the group. "They are also the ones
that reap the benefits from it…They're the ones that should make the decision."
The mayor says TARTA is an important part of the community. He says it
allows residents like Kelly the ability to get around, and it allows the city
to receive extra consideration for certain public grants. They receive money
back for transportation improvements.
Citizens Choice is not for or against TARTA, they are just advocating
the community's right to vote on the issue.
"The committee's focus is not what should be the end result, what
should be public transportation in Rossford, of if there should be public
transportation in Rossford," Densic said. "The committee's focus is citizens.
