Maumee Panthers working hard for football season

Posted: Updated:
MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Maumee Panthers have a new football coach this year. Marc Gibson comes to Maumee after eight outstanding years at Clyde.

Maumee was six and four in the tough NLL a year ago. This year, they have to find new playmakers, as well as find the football players. Like Brian Awtrey, a junior running back.

"You watch him run around, he's just very smooth," Gibson said of Awtrey. "You can see the athleticism. [He's] very confident in himself. We're looking forward to using him in a lot of different situations."

As for quarterback, they have two solid guys ready to go: Brian Utter and Jordan Spellis.

But it takes hard work, top to bottom, to make a winning team.

"We wake up early," said senior Fred Scott. "A lot of practice. You know, practice makes perfect, so it's just pushing forward every day, trying to have a good season."

"We're definitely improving," said Zach Graven, also a senior. "We're just getting so much better."

So far, it's a new routine for the Panthers, but they're giving it a good effort.

"That's all you can ask," Gibson said. "We're not talking about wins and losses down the road. We're just talking about kids giving great effort and being competitive, and making sure the Maumee people around here are very proud of their performance, because they play the game the right way."
