(WMC-TV) - A Tipton County man is charged with first degree murder and aggravated child abuse in the December 2012 death of his 19-day-old stepson.
According to Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Bryan Austin DeMeza, 21, of Munford, found his newborn stepson, Zayne Hunter, unresponsive after shaking him earlier in the evening.
DeMeza admitted to shaking Zayne "eight to ten times in a fast motion forward to backward and falling on the infant twice".
TBI reports that DeMeza took the infant to his in-laws house after finding him unresponsive. It was the in-laws who called 911.
The baby boy was pronounced dead a short time later.
Autopsy results showed that Zayne suffered bruising and abrasions on his head and neck. He also suffered from a brain and spinal hemorrhage, as well as multiple rip fractures.
After the boy died, DeMeza informed investigators about incidents that happened in late November, just a few days after Zayne was born. The 21-year-old told investigators that he dropped the boy while standing in the kitchen. And a few days later, Zayne's head hit a door frame while DeMeza was holding him, causing a bruise to form on his forehead.
The baby did not receive any medical attention from the day he was born on November 17 until the day he died in December.
DeMeza is behind bars in Tipton County Jail with no bond.
