Whitmer Panthers preparing for successful season

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

High school football season is getting closer every day. The Whitmer Panthers are preparing to make another run at the state championship this year.

Most members of last year's state final team are gone, but Coach Jerry Bell isn't worried about it. The Panther tradition is high expectations that get results.

"We've really got a whole, brand new football team," Bell said. "But then again, they've embraced those high expectations. They're practicing at a high level."

Meet some of the players: Matt Winzler and Chase Bodeman have performed well as sophomore quarterbacks. Jamal Bell, a junior tailback, was understudy last year. Now it's his turn. And for defensive tackle there's junior Phillip Hoskins.

"We expect to be state champs," Hoskins said. "We come far. We work hard. No one works as hard as we do."

"Being part of this program is an honor," Jamal Bell added. "The coaching staff, the community, they support us and everything."

Coach Bell says the team is preparing to take that state title.

"That's our expectation, and that's how we practice," he said. "Our schedule, obviously, is gonna be tough. We're gonna embrace that and take on those opponents each week, and just take one week at a time to get back to where we want to be."
