There's less than a month to go for candidates running
for Toledo Mayor to make an impression with voters.
Early voting started last week, and at last check, 116
voters have showed up to the early vote center, and 996 have been sent a ballot
In the 2009 primary, 37,009 voters turned out. With the
potential for turnout to be somewhere around 15 percent, candidates know every
voter they win over will go a long way toward making the top two and moving
onto the November election.
Alan Cox finished third in the 1997 primary, and he's
targeting likely independent voters in his quest to finish top two this time
"We've got the list of non-partisan voters. We're trying
to get out and talk to them, make sure they're aware I'm one of the candidates,"
he said. "If people are upset, this is the one opportunity they're going to
Democrat Joe McNamara is hoping door-to-door campaigning
will get him one step closer to becoming Toledo's next mayor.
"I am personally knocking on as many doors as I can to
have those individual conversations with voters, to talk to them about my plan
to create jobs and hire more police," he said. "I think voters want to see a
change. I think Mayor Mike Bell will probably clear the primary."
‘Bell for Mayor' campaign organizer BJ Fischer says
there's no way they're taking a top two finish for granted.
"A primary where there's low turnout, typically those
elections can be very volatile," said Fischer. "Each individual vote in a low-turnout
election is really important. So the mayor's out doing his events, we're phone-banking.
We have people going door to door. We're working very hard to earn that
position in the primary."
There are 198,091 registered voters in Toledo. The
primary is scheduled for September 10.
