TPS dean, coach accused of relationship with student

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A Toledo Public Schools dean has been suspended after allegations that he had an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Lewis Ackerman was an integral part of several students' lives at Bowsher High School. He served as a dean of students, and a coach for baseball and ladies' tennis. With recent allegations, the district put Ackerman on paid leave July 5, for the duration of the investigation.

Letters to Ackerman from the district detailed the charges, including a violation of board policy in regard to sexual harassment, and a violation of student-staff relations. The letter says Ackerman conducted an inappropriate relationship with a female student at Bowsher during the 2012-13 school year.

Ackerman has been with TPS since 2003. There are no negative marks on his record before this.

TPS has notified the Ohio Department of Education of their investigation. If Ackerman is found guilty, he will lose his teaching license and never be able to teach in the state of Ohio again.
