Car break-ins spike in Sylvania Township

Posted: Updated:
SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Sylvania Township Police are dealing with something they aren't used to: car break-ins.

They say they've seen a drastic spike in cars being broken into, and there seem to be several potential thefts.

"It's unusual for us to have multiple suspects working not only all ends of the township, but I hear from neighboring jurisdictions," said Chief Rob Boehme.

One of those neighbors is Maumee. Detective Steve Crow, with the Maumee Police Department, says they've also seen a spike this year.

Boehme says these crimes seem to be drug-fueled and those responsible are good at what they do.

"Don't leave valuables in the car," he warns residents. "Especially if it's in plain view from outside the car. That's just asking to have your car broken into."

One person has been arrested for the crime so far, and Boehme believes more will be caught.
