Park director borrowed $2,500 from Olander Park

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Olander Park Director Gary Madrzykowski has resigned after being confronted about borrowing more than $2,000 from the park organization.

Park commissioners say they know of at least five instances where the director inappropriately borrowed money. They say in one case, Madrzykowski wrote a check to himself from the park system for $2,500. He is also accused of taking smaller amounts from the cash register or office and leaving ‘IOU' notes.

"It's public money. It belongs to the park, so I think that was wrong for him to do that," said Ben Rutherford, a park visitor.

Board members say the money was always repaid a day or two later, but they say Madrzykowski had no authority to borrow it. Visitors like Rutherford agreed.

"Even though he paid it back, he wasn't supposed to take it in the first place," he said. "It set a bad example for the people who work here, especially the high school students."

Others say they think the director deserves a second chance.

"It's easy to fire somebody, but it's also very hard to obtain someone with his experience and what he's done for the system," said Tony Gerrish, another visitor.

Board members say they don't plan to press charges against Madrzykowski, and they will begin their search for a new park director immediately.
