TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The City of Toledo is making some changes aimed at improving customer service for its public utility customers.

Director of Public Utilities Dave Welch says they are working to put more services online and create a more customer-friendly security deposit policy.

A measure before city council calls for spending $563,000 to upgrade the customer billing system for the department. A big part of that measure involves allowing customers to view their bills online, so they can keep up-to-date with them.

"That does a couple of things," Welch said. "They can see what their bill is, they can see when it's due, they can manage their account. And a side note to that, a lot of those folks call in and ask for that because they can't do it right now."

That change is expected to be phased over the next six months. Welch says this should go a long way toward reducing the number of calls going into their service center.

The city also has a new utility security deposit policy. Deposits will now only be required for accounts that have been turned off for non-payment or for violations such as water theft.
