Perrysburg Twp Police bike unit returns

Posted: Updated:
PERRYSBURG TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A new set of wheels is coming to the Perrysburg Township Police Department. They're bringing back their bike unit after more than 19 years.

In order to make the bike patrol unit as effective as possible, officers will be mounting bicycles directly onto the back of their cruisers. That way, they can cover all 55 miles of the township with ease.

The police are getting two bikes, and the unit will begin patrolling next month. They say they will target commercial areas to keep a closer eye on crime.

"We can get in places that cars can't," said Deputy Chief Mike Gilmore. "You can use stealth and do all kinds of things with a bike that we're kind of excited about."

Gilmore was on the Toledo Police bike patrol for six years. He says officers on bikes are more approachable.

Residents in the township agree. They say with recent growth in the township, more patrols are needed.

"The township is growing," said Rodney Chidester. "It's getting a lot busier and there are more people, a lot more traffic."

Gilmore says more people can mean more crime, especially on busy shopping days.

"Thanksgiving, weather permitting, is a huge shopping day," Gilmore said. "It's hard for some of our vehicles to get in and out of these parking lots, and it would be nice to deploy bikes in that area on that particular day."

The bike unit will operate on a part-time basis, year round, weather permitting.
