Eastwood Eagles coach gearing up for 32nd season

PEMBERVILLE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Jerry Rutherford is back for his 32nd year of coaching the Eastwood Eagles.

Now that he's retired from teacher, he's left with his dream job: football coach.

The Eagles tumbled from a 10-0 season to 5-5 last year. That has created a sense of purpose in the program this year.

"[We're working on] those little things, whether it be turnover or missed assignments – whatever it might be," said Rutherford.

"We're trying to come out and do a lot better this year," said Jacob Rahe, a senior lineman. "We've got to practice and work a lot harder."

The good news: They have Jack Schmeltz as a quarterback. Schmeltz started last year as a sophomore.

"It just helps so much, I mean, just knowing how to read the defense a lot better," he said.

The Eagles open their season at Patrick Henry.
