The king of the Internet auction sites is undoubtedly eBay. It is a great place to grab a bargain and a great place to sell goods you have lying around. Many consumers make a nice living selling their property on eBay. But they need to beware: the crooks are using new tricks to steal valuable merchandise from eBay sellers. Dick Eppstein, President of the Better Business Bureau of Northwest Ohio stopped by WTOL 11 News at Noon on Tuesday with some tips to avoid becoming a victim of this type of scam.
For example, you may be selling an old computer on eBay. The buyer says they want to purchase it, but need it right away. You receive an email from PayPal saying the money has been received, but it's a fake. PayPal is not actually behind the email; the ‘buyer' is. You ship the computer, but never receive payment.
To avoid becoming a victim of this scam, Eppstein says you should not be rushed by high pressure tactics. Be sure to confirm all payments with PayPal; don't just trust an email. Often the fake email will contain spelling or grammatical errors.
