Two Toledo firefighters were injured while battling flames on Kelsey Avenue and White Street in east Toledo.
The Toledo Fire Department was called to the scene at 4:20 a.m. Thursday. When they arrived, three garages were on fire.
Firefighters say the fire started in a garage of a vacant house, then spread to two neighboring garages of occupied homes. The fire also destroyed a pool.
According to the fire chief, a firefighter on a ladder fell battling flames in the attic of one garage. He was taken to the hospital with a broken leg and may need surgery. Another firefighter was injured when debris fell on his head. He was treated at the hospital with minor injuries and released.
The homeowners were able to get out safely before some of the siding melted from the heat of the flames.
Arson investigators were called to the scene. They still do not know how the fire started. The investigation continues.
