BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A new shopping plaza and upscale apartments are coming to Wooster Street, near downtown Bowling Green.

The $2.6 million project is finally moving forward after a zoning battle between the city and property owner.

Market Square will have five or six new stores and restaurants on the first level, including a Biggby Coffee and Jimmy Johns. Upstairs, there will be 16 1-bedroom, upscale apartments. The plan is to appeal to professionals rather than undergraduate students.

"Grad students, professors and TAs, and even business professionals," said Steve Green, owner of Mecca Management.

The plaza will be in a prime location on the heavily-traveled Wooster Street, near the new CVS pharmacy. It will also add about 25 jobs.

But not everyone is a fan. Some people say the site should stay a parking lot.

"Continue to be more parking available for downtown and maybe more hometown businesses, small businesses," said Jesse Crom.

Green says one thing is certain:

"It will be new and fresh, and we're happy to be part of renewing the housing stock in Bowling Green," he said.

The shops are estimated to be open late next spring.
