40 homes being built in central Toledo neighborhood

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Construction is underway on a $10.4 million project to build 40 new homes in central Toledo.

The homes will be in the neighborhood between Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center and Scott High School. The Legacy Homes Project is a partnership with NeighborWorks Toledo Region and Mercy's Cherry Street Legacy Project.

The new houses are being built in an area where plenty of vacant house demolition has occurred in recent years.

"All of the land we're using came from the Lucas County Land Bank program, and it was made accessible to us for a very low price," said William Farnsel with NeighborWorks Toledo Region.

Neighbors are hoping it'll be a major shot in the arm for the area.

"I think it's great, some new families come in and hopefully it'll change the neighborhood, change the atmosphere," said Ronald Spencer.

"This is a good thing to redevelop the community," added Lorrain Foster.

Once built, the homes will be available for rent with an option to buy after 15 years.

"The houses we're building here will be very energy efficient," Farnsel said. "They have a high recycle content, 40 percent recycle content."
