Cincinnati celebrated the arrival of pieces of the Queen City's namesake submarine, the USS Cincinnati.
The Cincinnati Council of the Navy League of the U.S., the Cincinnati Base of the U.S. Submarine Veterans, Inc., members of the Navy Reserve and the Naval Support Center Cincinnati, Sea Cadets, and former crewmen of the USS Cincinnati celebrated the arrival at Great American Ball Park on Saturday.
The USS Cincinnati was commissioned in 1978 and decommissioned in 1996. It was later dismantled and scrapped at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard near Seattle.
The Navy determined that USS Cincinnati contained too many classified features to allow transport of the entire submarine to Cincinnati as a museum vessel for public display.
Pieces of the vessel included in the Cold War Memorial include.
The pieces will be on display at the Welcome Arrival Ceremony held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
The pieces of USS Cincinnati will then go for refurbishment and storage to await installation upon completion of the site of the USS Cincinnati – Cold War Memorial.
