TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

It made national headlines in July - and now the city council is getting the bill for a massive sinkhole that ripped apart a major intersection.

That bill is to pay for the emergency repairs to the street and sewer lines where the sinkhole occurred. One woman was injured when the ground opened up below her and swallowed her whole as she drove through Detroit and Bancroft. She fell - car and all - several feet below the street, was recovered by firefighters, and made a full recovery.

It turns out, a crossover section connecting two sewer lines collapsed July 3, causing the sinkhole. Now - a measure waiting for approval from City Council will authorize a $73,000 payment to Schumaker Brothers Construction, a private contractor which was called in to assist the city with repairs.

The contractor repaired the broken lines, backfilled the hole and restored the damaged pavement. Toledo Public Utilities Director Dave Welch says the city needed to bring in outside help to address the situation.

"That's a busy road at Detroit and Bancroft. It was affecting the area. It was a 36-inch main that broke. We had to get in there right away. These guys, as private contractors, have the expertise to get to it right away. That's why we used them," said Welch.

According to Welch, when you factor in city worker labor, the sinkhole cost the city $100,000 from the sewer operating fund.
