Scammers looking to take advantage of Obamacare implementation

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The federal government, state and local governments, business and individuals are all working to implement and comply with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare.

With the many changes to the American healthcare system comes an opportunity for scammers looking to cheat you out of money.

Dick Eppstein from the Better Business Bureau of Northwest Ohio offers the following tips to avoid becoming a victim:

  • There is no card associated with health care reform.
  • There is no new Medicare card, and you do not have to update any personal information.
  • The Health Insurance Marketplace (also known as exchanges) doesn't open until Oct. 1.
  • Don't respond to a cold call of any kind, especially one that asks for personal information or money.
  • Don't trust caller ID, which can be rigged to look as if the call comes from a government office.
  • Don't let anyone rush you. The rates in the exchange won't change from Oct. 1 to March 31.
  • Anyone promising a "special price" or "limited time offer" or who tells you "spots are limited" is lying.
