JERUSALEM TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Township Fire Chief Harold Stanton was reinstated last week by a Lucas County
Judge. Now, township trustees are appealing the verdict.
their meeting Wednesday, trustees voted to appeal the judge's ruling.
March, the trustees voted to terminate Stanton as fire chief. They claim that
after warning Stanton several times to not allow former firefighter Jim Gray to
participate in emergency calls, he continued to do so.
to court documents, the judge decided the board's decision was illegal because
it failed to comply with the township personnel policies and procedures manual,
as well as unconstitutional, because trustees served in multiple roles in
making the decision.
statement released by the board's attorney said:
view, Chief Stanton was properly terminated as Chief of the Jerusalem Township
Fire Department because he failed to take any measures to stop an uncertified
firefighter from appearing at fires and/or EMS runs and, once there, offering
unlawful aid or assistance."
call made to Chief Stanton has not been returned.
