TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The National Museum of the Great Lakes needs volunteers.

The final pieces to the public park area will soon be put into place, and work is in full gear for the indoor museum. Now, the project is launching efforts to attract new volunteers and members.

The museum is looking to match the interest and skills of potential volunteers to the needs of the organization. Opportunities are available with docents, administration, fundraising, research, grounds maintenance and museum gift shop activities.

With construction of the indoor museum going on and exhibits yet to be installed, the goal is to get people involved early on, even before everything is ready to be opened to the public.

"All aspects of what we're doing down here, from maintenance doing stuff on the boat, to the park assisting with keeping everything nice and trim, to everything inside the building, docents for the museum docents for the ship," said Anna Kolin, with the museum.

People interested in volunteering at the new National Museum of the Great Lakes can attend a meeting Friday night from 5 to 7 p.m. at 1701 Front Street in Toledo. Those who cannot attend but would like more information can contact the museum at glhs1@inlandseas.org.

On Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., the Schoonmaker museum ship will be open as part of a Lucas County Appreciation Day event, with the goal of attracting new members for the Great Lakes Historical Society.
