SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -
Explosions erupted with as many as three mobile homes catching fire in the Salt River area Sunday morning, Scottsdale fire officials said.
First responders from Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe and Mesa arrived in the 8700 block of East McKellips as the homes went up in flames and smoke at about 7:30 a.m., according to Scottsdale fire Capt. Danny Ables.
The homes were in Shadow Mountain Village on the Salt River Reservation.
"We knocked on doors and asked everybody to leave their residence and come to the Pima Center," said Salt River police Detective Vincente Cendejas.
Fire investigators are trying to determine if flammable liquids were present in one of the homes, said Salt River fire Chief David Bunce.
Bunce said the fire started in one of the mobile homes and spread to the others.
Fire crews assisted the Salt River Fire Department battle the blazes.
The Red Cross is on the scene to help those residents who were displaced.
Two streets are without power in the area, Bunce said.
"We just kept hearing a lot of pops," said one of the neighbors, Linda Whittle.
Another neighbor said a handyman lives in one of the homes. "There's a lot of chemicals in there. Every time it would hit another chemical, it would just flare up," said Dee Dee Bernam.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
