A Mesa teen faces an array of charges after he allegedly stole a police officer's marked patrol car with a loaded AR-15 in the trunk, investigators said.
GPS led officers to the vehicle about a half mile down the road in a park. The suspect had bailed out and police found him hiding in some bushes.
The incident began when police responded to a party at an apartment complex in the 500 block of North Mesa Drive.
Officers were standing right next to the cruiser when the teen slipped by, shifted it in gear and took off.
The suspect backed up into another police cruiser and then, as it was pulling forward, hit the corner of an ambulance while driving away, said Mesa police spokesman Tony Landato.
One witness said she's glad the suspect is in custody.
"That's definitely shocking to me but I'm glad they did catch him and everything is OK and nobody got hurt," said Bria Gammon. "I just moved here and to see that in the neighborhood, it's different."
Among the charges the teen is facing include aggravated assault and theft of a vehicle.
