(WMC-TV) - In just a few days, the streets of Oxford will be packed with Ole Miss fans heading to the football game. That is no different than years past, but one thing that will be different is the parking situation on game day.
A change in policy has Ole Miss students irritated and a lot of people talking.
If you want to park on campus for the game, you will need a parking pass, otherwise, you will only be allowed to drop people off or unload for a tailgate. First come, first serve is no longer an option.
In addition to that new policy, only students living on campus will be allowed to park on campus.
City leaders say the change in policy is to clear sidewalks for people with disabilities. In years past, they say, cars blocked sidewalks and curbs.
"We're going to tow your vehicle if it's in a no parking area or parked illegally," said Jimmy Allgood, City of Oxford.
Campus parking passes were sold in packages ranging from $100 to thousands of dollars, leaving everyone else scrambling for a place to park.
"I understand rewarding alumni who pay that amount to support the athletics program with a nice parking spot, but it's also a disadvantage because part of your supporting base for the athletics and the football team is the student section," said Ole Miss student Ruben Ruiz.
The university will provide about 1,000 spots with a free shuttle service from the old mall parking lot and whirlpool plant. The city will have $5 shuttles from free lots at the conference center, the activities center, and the middle school.
"It's a huge endeavor," said Isaac Astill, Ole Miss Parking and Transportation. "We've added about 100 security positions on campus to ensure that only those with permits are allowed in."
If you are thinking about parking in a premium spot on the square, it will cost you. Fines for cars parked more than three hours start at $40.
