A Pac-12/Big 10 matchup is the game to see in Week 3. (Source: College Pressbox)
(RNN) – A large number of fans, prognosticators, amateur analysts and ESPN thought that the No. 15-ranked Texas Longhorns were back – retooled, moderately ranked and one of the better teams in the Big 12.
BYU wasn't aware others felt that way, and didn't care. The unranked Cougars defeated the Longhorns 40-21 in Provo on a Saturday that saw Texas allow 679 yards of total offense.
The unranked Miami Hurricanes defeated No. 12 Florida early Saturday. The Canes' five-point win against their in-state rival was highlighted by Miami's defensive strength and Florida's five turnovers – three in the end zone.
These two unranked teams could replace some teams that are falling out of the Top 25 and out of favor (looking at you, USC Trojans).
Oregon – The offensive juggernaut that is No. 2 Oregon continues to roll, with 557 yards of total offense led by junior running back De'Anthony Thomas, who rushed for 124 yards.
Thomas' yardage was also the total rushing yards Virginia had for the entire game. NEXT UP: vs. Tennessee.
Ohio State – The No. 3 Buckeyes may have lost quarterback Braxton Miller in the first quarter with a knee injury, but his backup Kenny Guiton performed well, going 22-for-36 for 216 yards and one touchdown. NEXT UP: @ California.
Stanford – In their first game of the 2013 season, the No. 5-ranked Cardinals soundly defeated San Jose State by 21 points. NEXT UP: @ Army.
Louisville – A list of reasons to love No. 8 Louisville: they win quietly and decisively, everyone tried to steal their head coach Charlie Strong in the offseason and he stayed with his team. Their key statistics - ranked fifth in the nation in passing yards and ninth in points against.
The best reason to like Louisville - because their ridiculously easy schedule and sets up an undefeated season and another BCS at-large bid. That - like Louisville - is a sure thing.
Or, you could just like them because they are really good. Imagine them in a playoff scenario... NEXT UP: @ Kentucky.
Northwestern – The No. 19-ranked Wildcats don't face a ranked opponent until Oct. 5 at home against No. 3 Ohio State. Until then, Northwestern will enjoy hanging 40+ points on Western Michigan and Maine in the next two weeks. NEXT UP: vs. Western Michigan.
Other Top-25 winners: No. 4 Clemson won big against South Carolina State; No. 13 Oklahoma State allowed 35 points to UT-San Antonio, but won by 21; No. 17 Michigan rocked Notre Dame in the Big House; No. 16 Oklahoma won a close game against West Virginia; No. 21 Wisconsin shut out Tennessee Tech; No. 23 Baylor moved to 2-0 with a 70-13 thumping of Buffalo; No. 24 TCU defeated Southeastern Louisiana.
Notre Dame – That tipped pass interception in the end zone by Michigan with 1:29 remaining in the game was a spectacular nail in the Irish's coffin in front of college football's biggest crowd.
Nothing could beat that, except the awesomely weird interview between Brent Musburger, Kirk Herbstreit and Eminem. NEXT UP: @ Purdue.
Texas – The Longhorns' road to redemption was halted soundly by BYU. Their next game is at home against unranked, undefeated Ole Miss - and they won't be easy to beat.
The only people who want to watch Texas subscribe to the Longhorn Network, and they are changing the channel. NEXT UP: vs. Ole Miss.
Southern California – Not much to be said about the No. 25-ranked Trojans.
Only mustering 193 yards of total offense in their first Pac-12 loss – a 10-7 defeat to Washington State - doesn't show that USC can hold up in the Top 25 or the Pac 12.
USC's head coach Lane Kiffin is firmly on the hot seat. NEXT UP: vs. Boston College.
Week 3 game of the week: No. 18 UCLA @ No. 22 Nebraska.
A wonderful Pac 12 – Big 10 game starts off Week 3.
Nebraska defeated Southern Mississippi 56-13 on Saturday; UCLA was off in Week 2 and provides to be a solid Top 25 matchup.
