Sylvania Schools focus on bus safety training

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Bus safety is something Sylvania school leaders say the district takes very seriously.

On Tuesday, elementary students learned how to stay safe on and off the bus. They learned how to cross the road safely, safety inside the bus, and how to evacuate safely in case of an emergency.

The training is mandatory in Ohio for all students in Kindergarten through third grade, but all Sylvania elementary students were involved this year.

"The bus is the extension of the classroom, so it's important for us to take part in those drills, as well," said John Dell, director of transportation for Sylvania Schools. "You never know when an accident may happen, so this just prepares the children in case such an event would take place."

The district experienced a tragic accident three years ago when a Northview High School student was struck and killed by an SUV. Since then, they have focused even more on safety.

Gloria Nixon is an on-bus instructor, and says they teach children why it's important to be safe. She says she wants motorists to keep an eye out for school buses and their yellow lights.

"Don't try to go through the yellow light," Nixon said. "Back off and let the bus stop and do what needs to be done…The little, precious material on the inside of our buses are much more precious than you getting to work on time…We need to take care of our children."
