This year's Toledo Fire Academy recruits marked Sept. 11 by remembering the 343 firefighters who lost their lives.

The 51 recruits were up before the sun to salute the flag at half-staff. They then participated in a unique challenge: They climbed up and down a tower 110 times, the same amount as the New York firefighters did 12 years ago.

"Give them a little taste of what that must have been like years ago as those firefighters ascended those stairs, trying to affect the rescue and fight that fire," said Toledo Fire Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld.

The recruits were silent for most of the activity. As the temperature in the stairwell rose and sweat drenched their shirts, the recruits didn't give up. They asked to carry heavy equipment.

The whole time, they were also listening to the actual dispatch of Brooklyn firefighters as they went into the flames 12 years ago.

"We want our recruits to hear that," said Hertzfeld. "Actually, we want all of us to hear that. We want to hear those voices and remember the service and dedication that those firefighters put forth that day.
