PERRYSBURG TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Students at Penta Career Center had a special memorial service Wednesday for Patriot Day.

It was organized by students to remember nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

"I was only four years old at the time," said Austin Fleck, a senior. "I was a Kindergartner. I only remember being sent home."

Fleck spoke to nearly 100 people during the ceremony. He said for most of his life, the country has been at war. The wars influenced him to pursue a career in criminal justice.

"It made me think that I want to help people," he said. "I want to build up the public, and I would gladly put my life on the line to save others."

Many in attendance couldn't hold back tears as ceremonial taps were played. Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn spoke about how he volunteered in New York shortly after the attacks that gave the nation a stronger desire to wave the red, white and blue.
