(WMC-TV) - It is a sight on Beale Street that you cannot miss, except when it is missing! The iconic Memphis Music sign is back in place after being taken down for some repairs.
There are a lot of signs on Beale Street, but the Memphis Music sign is arguably one of the most photographed. During the last few weeks, the sign was nowhere to be found for people hoping to take a snapshot.
"The sign is often the representation of Memphis," said Malcolm Burt, owner of Memphis Music. "They pressure washed the sign, repainted, re-gassed neons, and we did the whole to do, everything that we could do to get it back up to par."
For several weeks, crews worked to clean the sign and its absence was felt.
But Thursday afternoon, crews took over Beale Street to bring the historic sign back to life.
"We're really proud to have worked with Chuck Mitchell on this sign at Mitchell Creative," said Burt. "He designed this sign 21 years ago and I think it's one of the most photographed signs in the state of Tennessee."
Burt owns Memphis Music, the store below the famous sign. He says as the sign aged, the times changed, prompting a new slogan on the famous sign: "Everything blues, soul and rock and roll."
