Report cites major issues at Toledo Correctional Institution

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Toledo Correctional Institution has been cited for major problems in several areas after a recent inspection.

The 164-page report was released Thursday by the Correctional Institution Inspection Committee. It cited the Toledo Correctional Institution for high employee turnover rates, significant increases in assaults, rampant drug trading, and three homicides in just the past year.

The report shows that inmate-on-inmate assaults increased by nearly 113 percent, and inmate-on-staff assaults increased nearly 74 percent from 2010 to 2012.

According to the report, the facility was built to be a single-celled facility, but in early 2011, due to overcrowding, the cells were double-bunked. This resulted in double the population for staff to supervise, and increasing inmate complaints, as well as violence.

Aside from violence, the report also states concerns about a high percentage of inmate who tested positive for drugs.

The report does say Warden Edward Sheldon is aware of the concerns and is working to address them.

Toledo News Now put a call in to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections, but has not heard back.
