(Toledo News Now) -

Last Saturday night, I attended a library event that featured renowned author and historian David McCullough.

Mr. McCullough offered his views on America today.  Here are a paraphrased few that stood out for me:

"There was no simpler time… everyone lives in the moment that they have.  Nobody thinks of their time as being simpler."

"There is no such thing as the foreseeable future."

"Information is not learning."  He spent a lot of time on that one.  Think about it for awhile and it's kinda scary how we have gotten this so wrong.

"We have a kind of national amnesia…we are raising a generation of Americans who are historically illiterate.  It's our fault."

"Attitudes aren't taught, they're caught."

And finally…"By reading history, we are able to navigate life better, particularly in dangerous times, and also to develop a sense of humor.  And a sense of optimism."

It was a special evening.
