Toledo making plans for tire recycling program

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The City of Toledo is making plans to create a new scrap tire drop-off center, aimed at keeping junk tires from being illegally dumped in alleys and vacant lots.

The plan calls for the city to work with a local company called Stickney Recycling, to create a tire recycling operation.

The city has been awarded a $200,000 grant from the Ohio EPA, which requires a $204,000 local match. The money will go toward equipment to shred old tires and separate out the steel-belting material. That rubber material can be used in a variety of ways, including for street repaving and playground fill.

Toledo Public Service Director Ed Moore says the project will help address environmental concerns with junk tires being dumped where they shouldn't be.

"What this project will allow us to do is develop that business here in Toledo with a local company," Moore said. "It's going to grow their business. It'll allow businesses and citizens to drop off tires as well as what the City of Toledo collects as well."

A measure is now before council to approve the local matching funds.
