CANTON, OH (WOIO) -

Shawna Snyder and her 5-year-old son are back at their Canton home a day after evacuating because of a chemical fire at the former Convoy Container company.

"It was pretty bad. The smoke was not that bad but then it started getting black. And then it was like we gotta go. I started getting worried because they started sounding the horns and stuff like that," Snyder tells 19 Action News reporter George Smith.

Snyder was not alone. Thousands of residents were forced to evacuate because of toxic gasses and smoke. Smoldering sulfur dioxide forced classes to be cancelled at several schools nearby.

"At first it looked like a big red cloud and then the cloud turned blue. And I mean that stuff was shooting way up in the air," Canton resident, Peggy Mayle said.

Mayle decided not to evacuate and watched the fire from her window.

"I figured if it was going to get me, it was going to get me. Not trying to but if it happens, it happens," Mayle said.

Snyder and her son returned home around noon Tuesday and said everything appears to be O.K.

"Yes. Yes. We don't notice anything. Kids are happy. Everybody's happy to be back home. Yup," Snyder said.
