TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
new park coming to south Toledo will give local dogs the chance to run free.
City Council approved a re-zoning request and a special use permit Tuesday
afternoon, so the non-profit organization ‘Toledo Unleashed' can lease the site
of the former South Toledo YMCA for just $1 per year.
city money will be used to fund the new park.
think that other cities have done this, and the response has been very good in
other locations around the country," said Councilman George Sarantou.
it's up to Toledo Unleashed to raise enough money to put up fencing and
anything else they need. They recently raised $2,500 at a ‘pooch plunge,' but
say they need $65,000 for contractors to transform the empty land.
been hesitant, Toledo Unleashed, to take any big money because we wanted to be
sure this was a go, and now it's a go," said Tina Yoppolo, president of the
organization. "All of those people who want to give us money, please line up!
We're ready for you."
Ide lives near the site of the future park – more than four acres off Anthony
Wayne Trail and Woodsdale Park. He and his dog Willie are ready for a park
dedicated to dogs.
hope anybody can give anything to help them out and get them started because it's
well-needed out here," Ide said.
Unleashed hopes to have the park up and running by the end of the year. People
who want to use the park will need to have a membership, valid dog license, and
updated vaccinations. Toledo Unleashed will have to carry liability insurance
in case anyone is bitten at the park.
