St. John's United Methodist Church is at a busy intersection on Charlotte Avenue, but when the light turns red and you're stopped, you can't help but see the church marquee.
The sign refers to Jesus having two dads, but it's intent behind the words that the pastor of the church is trying to get across.
"It's about children and people who grew up in homes, extended families, parents that are separated and having stepdads," says Pastor Bill Campbell.
Campbell says Jesus is the perfect example for extended families since he has two fathers.
"Theologically, Jesus is the son of God, but also the son of Joseph," he says.
But like anything, it's how you interpret words.
Channel 4 showed shoppers at Nashville West the sign. Some had a nervous laugh and left it at that.
A man saw the sign earlier Tuesday as he drove by the church and had some time to think about it.
"I read that today," he said. "I've been thinking about that. We were on Charlotte, and we were stopped, and I looked at that. I wondered what that really means - does it mean literally or does it mean what's happening today?"
Campbell said he thinks the assumption is that they're taking a stand on same-sex marriage.
"For me, it's more about a concern of what do we do about families and a message to children," he said.
Campbell never thought these 10 words would garner so much attention.
"I thought it was eye-catching; didn't realize it was going to be that eye-catching for a lot of people," says Campbell.
