(WMC -TV) - Democratic Congressman Steve Cohen of Memphis sparked controversy during an MSNBC show while addressing an NRA-related political cartoon he tweeted and those who oppose gun control.
"I think their guns are right there next to their bibles," said Cohen. "I'm not sure which they find more important to them."
Some praised his comments. But some say it was a cheap shot including West Tennessee congressman Stephen Fincher, who happened to play a gig Wednesday night with the capitol hill band called, coincidentally, "The Second Amendments."
"We need to act like adults and not fall into the trap of playing politics with a tragedy like this," said Fincher.
Fincher says Cohen should also keep faith out of the gun control debate.
"My colleague loves to stay on Twitter and loves to make comments," said Fincher.
Cohen says he is only trying to keep another tragedy from occurring.
"I'd like to see background checks and stronger background checks, and I think if you could at least do mental health ... That's important," said Cohen.
Fincher said look no further than Chicago and Washington, D.C. itself for proof that stronger gun laws do not work.
