Point Place trying to bring business back

Posted: Updated:
POINT PLACE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Point Place community is hoping that some research will help them learn how to drive business to their area.

"[Businesses are] struggling to make payroll, struggling to keep their doors open, fighting just to survive," said Jim Nowak, president of the Point Place Business Association (PPBA).

After a survey of local businesses, the PPBA is trying to make a change.

"Yeah, you're going fishing, but afterwards, you want to have dinner here," Nowak said. "You need something for your boat? Well, there's a place you can buy things."

The PPBA started the Business Retention and Expansion Initiative that helped them survey business owners. They say it's a program that will eventually help them figure out how to move forward.

"What we want to do is keep working with the community to nurture those lines of communication, to help form an economic development plan based on what they found out in the information from the surveys to the businesses," said Joe Lucente, assistant professor at OSU.

Phase one was identifying the problems, but they say there's a lot more to do.

"Phase two is we're going to get with the City of Toledo, and we're going to sit down with them, and we're going to find out what sort of efforts we can reach out to for the present business owners and future business owners," said Len Syrek, coordinator for the initiative.

They believe with the right type of marketing and training, Point Place can flourish the way it once did.
