Victim wants sexual orientation included for hate crime in Ohio

Posted: Updated:
CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

We found Ohio does not have a law making an attack on gays a hate crime but that may soon change.

Our investigation came after an arrest was made for a gay man attacked outside a gay bar on Cleveland's west side on Labor day weekend.

First district investigators arrested a 16-year-old but they didn't charge him with a hate crime.

The Ohio Attorney General's office confirms the state only has special laws for targeting people because of race, or religion, or nationality.

So the Cleveland Council Public Safety Chairman Kevin Conwell says he'll start working right now to make attacking gays a hate crime.

The feds already have a hate crime law against gays and now the victim in this attack would like to see those local laws changed.
