City officials respond to soccer demand in BG

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The City of Bowling Green just purchased 20 acres of land to develop into athletic fields.

A little more than 1,000 kids in Bowling Green play soccer. The sport has been quickly outgrowing the university fields, so city officials are stepping in. They paid $500,000 for the property on West Newton Road, next to the community center, and hope to have 5-10 acres sodded by 2014.

In 2015, everything should be finished and ready for play.

"I think it's great if it's gonna be good for the community and good for the kids, and another place I can take the children to have outdoor activities and for them to be outside and exercising," said Amber Hines, a resident.

The new fields will primarily be used for soccer, lacrosse and rugby.
