TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
The city of Toledo is testing a new program to help some families with home improvement projects. A pilot program is focusing on the London Square neighborhood in central Toledo.
For families struggling to make ends meet, setting aside money to get a fresh coat of paint on the home can be a challenge. Around $23,000 from the city's federal community development block grant has been allocated for the program to help homeowners in a low-income neighborhood.
To start, the city selected five homes where the family income does not exceed 80 percent of the area median income. Participating homes are located in the 2000 block of Forest Avenue, as well as the 1100 block of Grand Avenue and West Woodruff Avenue. The homes are owner-occupied and current on property taxes. Homes in foreclosure cannot be considered.
On Tuesday, Mayor Mike Bell met with some of the homeowners. People in the neighborhood say a little help from the city can go a long way to boost community pride.
"As we watch these homes get painted, and being as beautiful as they can be, and improving our neighborhood, and making it look so great, we are thankful to the Department of Neighborhoods," said K. LaVerne Redden, London Square Block Watch leader.
"I'm very excited about this program and honored to be able to have this done," said Elaine Murry, whose home is getting painted.
The city is planning to offer the paint program in the spring of 2014.
