In a couple of weeks, the Toledo Area Humane Society will be opening their own thrift shop. The 5,000 square foot space shop will include items like clothes, furniture, home goods, pet supplies and even a cat room for adoptions.
"It gives another outlet for more animals to get permanent homes and kind of tie in our connection of why they're there shopping to help those animals that they see their everyday," said Executive Director of the Toledo Humane Society Gary Willoughby. "It is a great opportunity to adopt out cats as well as raise money for our organization."
Willoughby has been with the Toledo Area Humane Society for six months. He brought the idea with him from South Carolina after opening three thrift shops there.
"As a private charity that gets no government funding or United Way funding or anything like that, we're always in need of extra donations and resources," said Willoughby. "So it was great, I know a proven way to raise money for our organization."
Donations have already begun to pour in just a couple weeks shy of the grand opening target date of October 12th, and once the store opens, it's all about the animals.
"My stores down in South Carolina were by far our largest source of revenue for the entire organization," Willoughby said. "Its unrestricted income we could use to help spay/neuter more animals, for medical care, anything we need, it allows us those opportunities to help in the community where it's needed."
