Fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year here in the Greater Cincinnati area. The Great Parks of Hamilton County has a long list of autumn activities to get you and your family into nature.

A valid Great Parks of Hamilton County Motor Vehicle Permit ($10 annual; $3 daily) is required to enter the parks. Armleder and Fernbank Parks are cooperative ventures with the Cincinnati Park Board; a Motor Vehicle Permit is not required.

10/3–10/27, Thu–Sun, 6–10 p.m.: Halloween Nights

Join in on the spooky fun at Parky's Farm. Featuring tens of thousands of lights, dozens of whimsical Halloween light displays and family-fun entertainment. Purchase tickets online or by calling 513-521-7275, ext. 285. Winton Woods at Parky's Farm (Cost is $7/person or $6/person if you preorder online and free/children under 2)

Fri 10/4, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.: Pumpkin Patch

Hop on a hayride to pick out the perfect pumpkin from our patch! Visit some animals, check out the fall crops and play in the Playbarn. For children ages 2−8. Adult admission does not include a pumpkin, but pumpkins can be purchased separately. To purchase advance tickets, call 513-521-3276, ext. 100. Winton Woods at Parky's Farm (Cost is $6/child and $2.50/adult if registered by three days prior or $7/child and $3/adult the day of the event.)

Fri 10/4, 11 a.m.: Owls

Register your toddler, ages 2−4, for this exciting program all about the owls in our area. We will even meet a live owl! The program is followed by a story time and a craft. Miami Whitewater Forest (Cost is $5/child. Register at greatparks.org by 10/2.)

Fri 10/4, Noon–5 p.m. & Sat 10/5, 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m.: Fall Fever Plant Sale

Fall can actually be a better time to add trees, shrubs and perennials to your landscape, because they have time to acclimate without the threat of hot and dry weather. Let our horticulture and landscape staff help you with your selections. Glenwood Gardens

Fri 10/4, 8–9:30 p.m.: Glow Disc Golf Under the New Moon

Challenge your family and friends to a round or two of disc golf on a dark October night! Experience our glowing woodland course for up to 1.5 hours of play time.

Bring your own glow disc or rent one of ours. Great for all ages! Winton Woods (Cost is $5/player and $5/rental disc. Register at greatparks.org 10/3.)

Sat 10/5, 9:30 a.m.: Boy Scout Trail: Nature Merit Badge

Attention Boy Scouts and leaders! Join us for a hike and interactive activities as we spend two hours accomplishing the necessary tasks to complete the Nature Merit Badge requirements. Woodland Mound (Cost is $5/scout. Register at greatparks.org by 9/30.) 

Sat 10/5, 2 p.m.: The Flowers of Fall

Walk along the trail in search of the season's best wildflowers, including goldenrods and asters. Identify the inconspicuous ragweed and learn why the showy goldenrods are not the source of fall allergies. Farbach-Werner Nature Preserve at the Pin Oak Trail (Free)

Sat 10/5, 5:30 p.m.: Bats

Join the naturalist for a batty good time. We will be discussing bats and their special adaptations, along with their roles in our ecosystem. Winton Woods at Winton Centre (Free)

Sat 10/5, 6 p.m.: Fall Walk & S'more Fun

Enjoy a night in the park with a leisurely stroll on a nearby paved path. The walk is followed by "s'more" fun around a fire near the lake as the sun sets. Miami Whitewater Forest/Visitor Center (Cost is $1/person, payable at the door.)

Sat 10/5, 6:30 p.m.: Hoot n' Holler Hike

Take a walk on the wild side as we watch and listen for owls. The hike will be through some less-traveled areas of the park on unpaved, uneven ground. Recommended for ages 8 and up. Sharon Woods at Sharon Centre (Free)

Sun 10/6, 10 a.m.: The Vineyard 2-Man Scramble Tournament

Team up with a friend to compete in this fun, 18-hole event. Entry includes greens fees, team prizes, contests and post-round snacks. Woodland Mound at The Vineyard Golf Course (Cost is $100/team. Register at greatparks.org by 10/1.)

Sun 10/6, 2 p.m.: Shawnee Lookout Fall Color Hike

Hike the hills once traveled by ancient Hopewell people and enjoy overlooks of the Ohio and the Great Miami Rivers under some fabulous fall foliage. Shawnee Lookout at the Miami Fort Trail (Free)

Sun 10/6, 1 p.m.: Hike with John A. Ruthven

The John A. Ruthven celebration continues with a "Hike with John" beginning at Sharon Centre. Immediately following the hike is a reception where you will have an opportunity to meet and greet John. Sharon Woods at Sharon Centre

Sun 10/6, 2 p.m.: Feeling Nutty?

Are you nuts about nuts? Join us for a fun program to learn where nuts grow and the animals that crave these protein packets. We'll end with a hike to search for nuts in the woods. Sharon Woods at Sharon Centre (Free)

Sun 10/6, 2 p.m.: Who Creeps in the Night?

As the sun sets, some animals are just waking up. Join us to find out who makes all those eerie sounds we hear at night. Woodland Mound at the Seasongood Nature Center (Free)

Mon 10/7, 10:30 a.m.: Second Annual Hamilton County Parks Foundation Golf Outing, Presented by Gold Star Chili

Registration includes golf, cart, range balls, lunch, dinner, prizes, hole contests and fun! Proceeds benefit the Simmonds Family Dog Park at Miami Whitewater Forest. Food provided by LaRosa's and Gold Star Chili. (Cost is $80/person or $320/foursome. Register at hcpfoundation.org.)

Wed 10/9, 8:30 a.m.: Walk Club Autumn Hike

Folks age 50 and older are invited to meet the naturalist for a hike along a wooded path winding through a beautiful forest while experiencing vistas of fall foliage all around you. Miami Whitewater Forest at Timberlakes Program Shelter (Free)

Join our experienced staff for a two-night backpacking trip and 8–10 mile hike along moderate to difficult trails in stunning Red River Gorge! Bring your own gear or rent some of ours. Meet at Winton Woods on October 9 at 6:30 p.m. for a chance to meet your guides and go over trip preparations. (Cost is $125/person, +$10 for optional backpack rental. Fri & Sat 10/11, 10/12, 10/18, 10/19, 10/25, 10/26, 6–10 p.m.: Haunted Village

This spooktacular family-friendly event is filled with ghostly attractions! Take a wagon ride through the village, but stay on the lookout for zombies or the Headless Horseman! Dance the night away at the Monster Mash Dance and enjoy games, face painting, balloon animals, a fortune teller and more! Refreshments will be available to purchase. Sharon Woods at Heritage Village (Cost is $8/person, payable at the door.)

Fri 10/11, 7:30 p.m.: Cincinnati Mineral Society Meeting

The public is invited to an educational program on a topic about rocks and minerals. Children's program begins at 7:30 p.m., and a program for both adults and kids follows a brief business meeting at 8 p.m. Sharon Woods at Sharon Centre (Free)

Sat 10/12, 9 a.m.: Meadow Links 2-Junior Scramble Tournament

Team up with a friend to compete in this fun event. The format will be a 9-hole scramble with net and gross prizes. Teams will be divided based on the total age of the team. Winton Woods at Meadow Links & Golf Academy (Cost is $35/team. Register at greatparks.org by 10/9.)

Sat 10/12 & Sun 10/13, Noon–4 p.m.: Black Walnut Weekend

You don't have to be a squirrel to enjoy the many activities at the Black Walnut Weekend! This fun event has something for the whole family, including games, crafts, black walnut foods and more. Local band Jake Speed & the Freddies will perform Sunday from 12:30−3:30 p.m. Farbach-Werner Nature Preserve/Ellenwood Nature Barn

Sat 10/12, 1 p.m.: Creatures of the Night

The night can sometimes make humans feel afraid or uneasy, but many animals thrive in the darkness. Join us to meet some of the nighttime hunters that can be found in your own backyard! Owl pellets will be available for dissection. Miami Whitewater Forest at the Visitor Center (Cost is $1/pellet, payable at the door.)

Sat 10/12, 2 p.m.: Birds of Prey

Bring the family and learn about some of our local birds of prey. You'll even meet a few up close! Winton Woods at Winton Centre (Free)

Sat 10/12, 2 p.m.: Woodland Discovery

Striking landscapes and impressive tree diversity make hiking the Trout Lily Trail a real treat. Join us to discover more about the beauty of a magnificent nature preserve. Withrow Nature Preserve at Trout Lily Trail (Free)

Sat 10/12, 6 p.m.: Autumnal Night Walk

As the sun sets, daytime animals begin bedding down as nighttime creatures begin to stir. This walk will take us through a very busy place in nature - the woods at dusk.

Sun 10/13, 2 p.m.: Spooky Spiders

Did you know you are never more than three feet from a spider? These spooky eight-legged creatures are all around. Come discover the amazing world of spiders and meet a few live specimens. Woodland Mound at Seasongood Nature Center (Free)

Sun 10/13, 2 p.m.: Warren Wells Preserve Hike

Are you eager to explore the "backcountry" of Winton Woods? Here is your chance to go off-trail! A naturalist guides this hike through a nature preserve named after famed naturalist, Warren Wells. Registered hikers will caravan together to the preserve. Winton Woods (Free. Register at greatparks.org 10/10.)

Sun 10/13, 3 p.m.: Cincinnati Dulcimer Society

The Cincinnati Dulcimer Society invites you to enjoy the sweet music of the mountain dulcimer. All ages are welcome to join in on the jamming and singing. Sharon Woods/Sharon Centre (Free)

Sun 10/13, 2 p.m.: Bear Badge Day

Bear Cub Scout leaders, this is your chance to complete the Sharing Your World with

Sat 10/19, 2 p.m.: Earth Science Week: Celebrate Maps & Mapping

Sat 10/19, 2 p.m.: Introduction to Letterboxing

Letterboxing is a family-friendly hobby that blends art and adventure. Learn the history of letterboxing and where to find clues. After we learn the basics, we will set out on an exciting letterboxing adventure. Woodland Mound at the Seasongood Nature Center (Free)

Sat 10/19, 6:30 p.m.: Full Moon Bike Ride

Grab your bike and join us on a 7.8-mile or 15.6-mile evening ride around Shaker Trace Trail. Afterwards, we'll celebrate under the full moon with some light refreshments. Front/back lights required and helmets highly recommended. Miami Whitewater Forest (Cost is $6/person. Register at greatparks.org by 10/17.)

Sun 10/20, 9 a.m.: Horses Helping Humans Special Riders Program/Special Olympics Horse Show

Cheer on our students at the eighth annual Horses Helping Humans Special Riders Program/Special Olympics Horse Show, running in conjunction with the Schooling Horse Show. Sun 10/20, Noon: Little Miami Scenic Bike Trail Series

Grab your bike and join us for a series of guided rides as we travel north along the Little Miami Scenic Bike Trail. This trip is approximately 28 miles (round-trip), beginning in Waynesville and traveling to Xenia. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to purchase refreshments. Helmets are recommended. Sun 10/20, 2 p.m.: Winter Bird Feeding

Want to bring the birds closer so you can enjoy them from the comfort of your warm home? Put out some feeders! Learn about birds' winter needs and preferences, so you can transform your backyard into a bird sanctuary. Farbach-Werner Nature Preserve at the Ellenwood Nature Barn (Free)

Sun 10/20, 2 p.m.: Leader of the Pack

The North American canids include wolves, foxes and coyotes. Related to the domestic dog, these wild "cousins" have brought fear and fascination to many. Come marvel in their mystery and beauty. Winton Woods at Winton Centre (Free)
