Five children and one adult were killed Sept. 15 in one of the deadliest fires in Tiffin in almost 20 years. Now three Tiffin groups are working to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.
Tiffin Firefighters' Local 322 President Rob Chappell got a call last week that set it all in motion. Over a year ago, a fatal fire in Attica took the lives of three children. As a result, the fire department there teamed up with local agencies to hand out smoke detectors to families. After the Tiffin fire, the Attica Fire Department suggested those in Tiffin do the same.
So the firefighters teamed up with Tiffin City Schools and the Seneca County Family and Children First Council to form the Safe Homes for Families – Tiffin chapter.
"Our goal is to raise enough money to, ideally, be able to purchase about 2,200 smoke detectors," Chappell said."Then that will get a smoke detector in each family's house in not only Tiffin City Schools, but also Bridges Academy and Calvert Schools."
There were working smoke detectors in the home of the Angel/Fresch family, but this partnership was formed in hopes of preventing a similar incident from happening.
"This is the start," Chappell said. "If you don't have a good, working smoke detector in your house to alert you that there's a problem and that you need to get out quickly, then there's not much else that we're going to be able to do."
The Attica Fire Department donated the first $1,000, and the state fire marshal's office donated the first dozen smoke detectors. The groups need to raise close to $20,000 to reach their goal.
Donations are being accepted at any Croghan Bank location in the name of Safe Homes – Tiffin Chapter c/o Tiffin Firefighters' Local 322. For more information, email email@example.com.
