OAK HARBOR, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A northwest Ohio park is closed today because the federal government is shut down.

Gates are locked and "closed" signs posted at the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in Oak Harbor. Park officials say those immediately affected by the shutdown include bird watchers, who come to the refuge to see bald eagles and other birds not seen in other parts of the area.

Officials say 15 employees are furloughed until the government is funded again, but two law enforcement officers will stay on staff.

"As federal employees, as public servants, we understand that there are challenges that are greater than us. Obviously we love to do our jobs, and we want to be here doing our jobs serving the community we support but that's not possible right now," said park employee Jason Lewis.

The park will remain closed until the federal government reopens.
