Thieves climb on roof, rip copper paneling from steeple

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Police say a thief or group of thieves climbed on the roof of a Toledo charter school overnight and stole a large piece of copper paneling off the building's steeple.

Teachers at the Lake Erie Academy on West Central Avenue noticed the piece was missing on Tuesday. Officials say the building, the former St. Anthony's Villa, was in the process of being renovated.

School leaders hope to work with the community to catch those responsible.

"We always try to work closely with the block watch and community members, and so it really is a matter of keeping our eyes open and making sure that if individuals see anything that they report it back to us and let us know what's going on so that we can try to prevent it and continue with our renovations," said Laura Kuhlenbeck, who works at the school.

School officials have also notified local scrap yards, who have been instructed to call Crimestopper at 419-255-1111 if they see a piece matching the missing panel.
