DANBURY TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A black bear was reportedly seen this week in Ottawa County, near the Dempsey Boat Ramp in Danbury Township.

Late Tuesday night, township resident April Keller called police while driving past the boat ramp area. She says, without a doubt, she saw a black bear. She described it as a large, dark-furred animal with a short, stubby tail.

"We had an officer respond, was unable to locate anything," said Chief Michael Meisler, of the Danbury Township Police. "But the caller was pretty adamant that it was a black bear."

Police then checked with the nearby African Wildlife Safari Park. The park confirmed they do not house any bears, and that all of their animals were secure.

The chief says residents should not keep a look out, but not worry.

"We obviously take every report seriously, but until we get another sighting, I wouldn't be too concerned about it," he said.

According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources website, there are about 100 confirmed black bears living in the wild in Ohio.

Black bears are protected by Ohio law. Killing or harming them is illegal. Anyone who sees a black bear in the Danbury Township area should call police at 419-732-2549.
