Don't Waste Your Money: Pet care myths that cost you

If you have a cat or dog, you've probably heard advice on how to care for it. But what is truly necessary for your pet? Don't fall victim to these top myths.

Many animal lovers spend thousands of dollars a year caring for their pets, from grooming, to routine visits, to quality food.

But there are some things we believe about our pets that turn out to be just myths, and could be costing you money.

1. Hypoallergenic?

The pet blog Vetstreet, which is run by veterinarians, says pet owners waste millions of dollars buying hypoallergenic, non-shedding dogs and cats.

Vets say that's a myth because all pets shed, some just shed less than others.

The blog suggests spending some time with the animal before you commit to taking it home.

2. Baths Not Needed?

Another myth is that dogs don't really need baths.

Vetstreet says weekly baths help prevent shedding and make them smell better.

3. No Need for Pet Shampoo?

Another myth is that human shampoo is the same as more expensive pet shampoo.

Not true! Pet shampoo is formulated for their fur. Use human shampoo, and you will be heading to the vet in a few months to ask about your pet's dander or skin rash.

4.  Cats Clean Their Own Teeth?

Forget what you heard, because pets don't clean their own teeth. Theirs need cleaning just like ours.

Vets say by saving money and avoiding dental care, you may end up with more costly repairs down the road to treat rotting teeth.

Listen to your vet. They know your cat or dog's needs, and know what doesn't work. In many cases, ignoring a silly, old myth will help your pet, and save you cash, so you don't waste your money.
