St. Luke’s gets emergency room makeover

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The emergency wing at St. Luke's Hospital is getting a makeover, and on Friday they held a Three Blind Wines fundraiser to help pay for a new children's activity center for the waiting room.

The hospital is increasing capacity and making sure privacy is a top priority. They have noticed a higher influx of patients with more serious injuries, so officials wanted to re-equip the hospital so it's prepared for the patients.

"Overall it the flow of the patients," said Daniel Wakeman, St. Luke's president. "One of the key things we're finding right now is our volumes in the emergency room have pretty much, what I call flattened out in the last few years, but the patients that are coming in are sicker. By putting in the new equipment and the layout, we can actually treat patients faster and better."

The emergency room is still operating while under construction. It is being done a section at a time.

Friday night, they held a fundraiser to raise money for a new children's activity center.

"The dollars raised from that are going to purchase not only the furniture for that waiting area, but smart boards," Wakeman said. "They're going to put in smart boards for the kids when they come in and they're waiting, to really give them an activity to keep them engaged in a safe way."

The $5 million project is expected to be completed by January.
